Introduction to Siemens S7 PLC Hardware
Siemens have SIMATIC (Siemens Automatic) Series PLC with 3 category.
- Micro PLC (Siemens Logo and S7-200,1200)
- Basic PLC (Siemens S7-300,S7-1500)
- Advanced PLC (Siemens S7-400)
Please find the below image for positioning of Modular PLC series in SIEMENS.
For the Siemens PLC before 2010 there was SIMATIC Manager software for Step 7 PLC programming except from S7-200. For the S7 200 we need MicroWin Software.
Right now SIEMENS have latest TIA (Totally Integrated Automation) software for PLC programing as well SCADA,HMI designing and Drive commissioning.
TIA is integration of 3 software’s
- Step7 For Siemens PLC Hardware configuration and Programming
- Wincc (Windows Control Center) for Siemens SCADA & HMI configuration& programming
- Start Drive for SINAMICS Series AC drive commissioning & parameterization.
The Modular Controllers have been optimized for control tasks and specially designed for ruggedness and long-term availability. They can be flexibly expanded at any time using plug-in I/O modules, function modules, and communication modules. Depending on the size of the application, the right controller can be selected from a wide range according to performance, quantity frameworks, and communication interfaces. The modular controllers can also be used as fault-tolerant or fail-safe systems.
S7-1200 PLC
Here we will understand S7 1200 Modular PLC hardware and its features.
S7-1200 PLC is widely used PLC in small application with modular based IO.
You can extend max 11 IO modules (depends upon CPU model) with the S71200 PLC.
You can integrate SIMATIC Memory card to expand CPU memory. The SIMATIC memory card is used as plug-in load memory or for updating the firmware. STEP 7 projects including comments and symbols, additional documentation or csv files (for recipes and archives) can also be stored on the SIMATIC memory card. Data blocks can be created and data stored or read via SFCs on the SIMATIC memory card with the user program
Communication protocols would be Profinet or Industrial Ethernet port by default but you can add other communication block for another communication protocols lilke RS-232, RS-485, Modbus, AS-I etc.
You can integrate Signal board with S71200 for extra IO (Max 2 analog or digital) without expanding physical size of the PLC.
You can write different PLC Programming languages in Siemens PLC as below
- Ladder (LDR)
- STL (Statement List)
- FBD (Function Block Diagram)
- Sequential Control Logic (SCL)
In S71200 we will get technological function like PID & High Speed Counters in built , so no need extra controller for close loop control.
S7 300 PLC
The S7-300 automation system is modular in design. It has a comprehensive range of modules that can be combined individually.
A system includes the following:
A CPU: Different CPUs are available for different performance ranges, including CPUs with integral inputs/outputs and the corresponding functions, as well as CPUs with integral PROFIBUS DP, PROFINET and point-to-point interfaces. Signal modules (SMs) for digital and analog inputs/outputs.
Communications processors (CPs) for bus connection and point-to-point connections. Function modules (FMs) for high-speed counting, positioning (open-loop/closed-loop) and PID control. Max 32 IO module can be connected with S7 300 PLC.
The following can also be used depending on requirements:
Load power supply (PS) for connecting the SIMATIC S7-300 to a supply voltage of 120/230 V AC.
Interface modules (IMs) for connecting the central controller (CC) and expansion units (EUs) in multi-tier configurations. The SIMATIC S7-300 can be operated with up to 32 modules distributed across the CC and 3 EUs. All modules can be operated in enclosures and without fans.
SIPLUS modules for extended environmental conditions, Suitable for temperature range -25 to +60 °C, and higher humidity, condensation and frost loads. Can be used direct on vehicles or outside building in an IP20 cabinet protected against direct sunlight and rainwater/spray water. Air-conditioned cabinet and IP65 housing not required.
